Our story

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the automobile is at the heart of economic development.

It has been the spearhead of industrialization as well as the workshops of "Haute couture automobile" named "Carrosserie de Luxe ».

Between 1900 and 1960 dozens of car brands have emerged and have unfortunately also disappeared. The two wars of the beginning of the 20th century have been fatal for many of them. Around the car brands, 3 major industrial players have also developed, which have themselves contributed to feed our unconscious images of discovery, travel and freedom. I am talking here about petroleum products, oils and tires. Without these three actors, the car would not have become what it is for us, namely the absolute expression of our dreams

To support the development of these brands, the end of the 19th century came with an extraordinary invention namely enamel. The mastery of enameling techniques has allowed to see in our streets hundreds of advertising supports dedicated to the promotion of brands! The oil companies could be the most efficient by multiplying the supply points. We have to remember that at the beginning of the 20th century the cars consumed a lot and that they required very frequent maintenance and lubrication.

The popular car brands have been massively marketed thanks to the many concessions present all over Europe.

In Europe, the four major countries which emerged on the automotive production market are Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. It is essentially in these countries that most of the production of "Automobilia" advertising objects is concentrated.

The advertising art is nowadays recognized thanks to the contribution of internationally well known illustrators who saw their creations transposed on different supports Enamel plate, metal sheets, posters, plaster, oil cans, advertising plasters etc ....).

The prestigious automobile brands have also used street advertising: Alfa-Romeo, Avion-Voisin, BMW,Bugatti, Delage, Delahaye, Minerva, ... and many others have left beautiful pieces that just ask to be exposed.

By the oil tankers, as for the oil mills, there are also extraordinary creations: BP with the plate "The Winner" or SHELL its his creation of Jean d'Ylen are among the most exceptional that today are more difficult to find than a Bugatti T-35.

While reading these words you will understand that at Advertising Automobilia Gallery we are passionate. Passionate people who have been collecting advertising art objects for more than 20 years for the sole purpose of preserving and gathering these exceptional objects, witness to our past and to the history of the automobile.

Enameled Signs

Enameled signs have been the most used communication support from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, but first and foremost the most resistant of all time.

When all was much slower, those supports could serve as communication support for several years. The resistance is the core of the enameled sign.

Metal signs

The stamped metal plates have for them their finess and their rarities. the technique used most often is lithography, combined with stamping.

Once these two techniques are combined, we are in the presence of real works of art with significant attraction. These plates were most often intended for "internal" use. They are fragile by nature and therefore very resistant to bad weather.

Oil Cans

The cans of oils are at the base of objects intended to contain the precious liquid used in large quantities in automobiles of the 30s.

At that time the oil changes had to be carried out every 1500km and their production was therefore almost as important as that of fuels. In the interwar period, the brands of oils were plethoric, in France alone hundreds of brands were listed. Some brands produced only a few dozen pieces, making them extremely rare.
